How Budgens alleviated staff efficiency and welfare concerns with VoCoVo Link

Budgens is a supermarket and convenience store chain with 260 locations across the UK. Established in 1872 as a family-owned grocer, it now operates as a franchise business under Booker UK, with independently managed stores serving local communities. One such community is Bourton-on-the-Water.

Bourton-on-the-Water sits in the Cotswolds with about 4,000 people and five low stone bridges over the River Windrush, hence the “Venice of the Cotswolds” tag.

Its Budgens sits on the High Street, looking out over the water, so the shop floor is busy and customer-facing from open to close.

Where the old process fell short

The team wanted faster, cleaner communication during the day. Before VoCoVo, help at the till meant ringing a bell, and anything that needed another person meant walking the length of the store to pass a message.

That slowed service: shoppers could wait at checkout while someone fetched a substitute or checked a price. Stock counts and replenishment suffered too, with repeated trips between floor and stockroom. With thinner shifts, it was also harder to call for backup from elsewhere in the store, which left safety and security feeling thin.

After making contact, Budgens brought in Brentwood Communications — a specialist in two-way voice and data, and an authorised VoCoVo reseller.

What they asked for

Brentwood ran a phone briefing to map how the team works together and what mattered most. The non‑negotiable was hands-free kit: people needed to scan and refill shelves without juggling a handset radio.

The kit they went with

Brentwood pointed them at VoCoVo Link single‑earpiece headsets. Staff stay mobile, keep both hands free for customers and tasks, and still hear colleagues. Calls go out from a push‑to‑talk control on the earpiece; Talk Lock covers fully hands‑free use when that’s better.

Link is built to be simple. A pack ships with four headsets and a charging dock, and going from box to working kit takes about ten minutes. Brentwood started with a trial set so the store could test before buying. Budgens liked it straight away and could see how Link would change the day-to-day flow.

What changed on the floor

Once the live system was in, feedback was strong. Decisions landed faster, service at the till improved, and replenishment ran smoother. On evening shifts with only two people in, the team also felt safer: they can report trouble or ask for help the moment something looks wrong.

After Bourton-on-the-Water went live, two more Budgens shops nearby ordered and installed VoCoVo Link through Brentwood Communications as well.

Budgens, like many retailers, wanted to improve team connectivity on the shop floor for faster responses and seamless customer service. Working closely with them, I saw firsthand how the VoCoVo Link could make a difference, and seeing the positive impact on Budgens and their teams has been so rewarding!
